Digital Marketing For Dummies
1. Don’t start with a broad strategy
Broadly speaking, there are two types of strategies in digital marketing – the narrow and the big approaches. A broad approach is used when you have to plan your entire campaign, from design to execution, while a narrower one is focused more on specific elements, for instance, email campaigns. The difference between the two is that the former is usually applied to different channels or niches, for instance, an email could be sent to many customers or a website could be designed with the specialty. In contrast to larger approaches, where every single element of the plan is defined, smaller ones typically use very small amounts of keywords and focus on a particular audience segment. For example, Amazon’s newsletters are usually about products and events rather than sales and promotions, because users don’t always check their emails or websites as often.
2. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it
If it makes things seem better, then make them better — at least, keep this advice in mind if you want to succeed at digital marketing. You need to think like a business owner with all kinds of options and possibilities in front of you. There are so many options and ways to build upon the core elements. So, if something doesn’t work out, don’t try to change it: try to find a solution instead. Here’s what one can do:
A) Focus on key processes
This means that if you want to improve anything, start by focusing on the process at hand. It may sound obvious, but that’s not the case every day. Most companies still use “broad strategies” without paying attention to those particular processes. They may even forget about their product vision and concentrate only on improving their features. This happens when you’re doing everything yourself. However, for most companies, it’s important to pay attention to how much time they spend on the same things. Some people think that this kind of approach is inefficient, but it does help create trust between you and your customer — this is why every company tries to follow the principle of the first four steps of user research. The problem is that no one knows exactly what the market is looking for and who its clients are. What matters is knowing what you need and how you can fulfill it. One can always improve without making any changes.
B) Create clear goals
Having clear goals helps you achieve great results. A goal helps you decide what you want. An example of such a goal could be a new channel, for example, social media advertising that will help increase conversions. Having a clear goal helps understand what you need and what you’re trying to prove, and ultimately helps you stay on track. Goals also help give you direction, which comes in handy when nothing seems to work well. To get better, take some time to define the goals of the channel. It helps you see what would happen if you make certain changes. Goal setting also allows us to make changes. We all know how hard it is to adjust your plans now and then, the right strategy is what saves the day!
3. Find the right balance between planning and execution
For sure, planning gives you a lot of freedom and flexibility and execution — in other words, being ready to do stuff without thinking too much about it. Planning also helps avoid mistakes and missteps. That way, it may become easier to find solutions to problems and deal with them quickly. But what’s the point of having a clearly defined strategy if execution is too much? Execution should be your priority. Yes, execution is a crucial part of your job, but execution shouldn’t be done alone. When planning, it becomes easy to imagine things, but the execution is what can turn that into reality. As soon as you start executing, you lose some flexibility — especially, if you’re working on complex projects with lots of details. By the way, when you start implementing your ideas, it’s never too late in fact, but too fast or too slow. For example, a business may start developing its website, but the implementation of this site will take a year, so don’t be surprised! And the website might look good and nice to the eye, but it takes several hours to implement, so make sure you follow through with your promise.
4. Identify the target audience, segmentation, and targeting
The main objective of any type of online promotion is to attract a potential buyer from a particular group. Whether it’s a male or female, it’s a common thing for advertisers to target females who live in the U.S., or even in Britain, Australia, or India. All of these markets are densely populated with women, so it’s a good idea to go after this age group and target localities. Targeting a particular gender helps you reach specific audiences. Also, you need to decide how detailed you want your advertisement to be, for instance, depending on your niche, you might want to consider a few pages at the beginning of the article to show all the features and benefits. Depending on your budget, you can choose to use an ad format or display ads. Different methods will have their advantages, so it’s up to you to figure out which route looks best to you!
5. Use proper keyword structuring
One of the biggest mistakes we make on our site is choosing poorly-structured keywords and focusing mostly on long keywords because they will be searched. No matter if someone searches for car insurance or real estate agents, both will be searched for, so you should try to incorporate them in the search, but take care not to overuse them. Unstructured keywords will usually perform worst. Do your research before coming up with a list of keywords. Take inspiration from web pages that have been built using SEO tools and look for relevant topics that people search for. These keywords should contain the words that searchers are likely to use during their searches to find the exact information they are looking for. Keep this in mind while writing your content. Aim for the general subject instead of a set topic. It may be a mix of both, for instance, “why men smoke cigarettes?” or “mobile phones vs. smartphones” (the general one here). Then, optimize it well and tell apart the actual keywords to be searched (this will help you narrow down your keywords and their relevance to the page and audience that will be found on Amazon or Google) and a bunch of unrelated ones that will be searched mainly to collect keyword data. Then, go back and replace your irrelevant keywords. Think about the future consequences. This will allow you to select keywords with high conversion rates since users are searching for keywords related to them. In addition, make your chosen keywords descriptive and meaningful for your page. Since the majority of keywords nowadays are based around Google, it makes sense to keep a few relevant keywords at hand in your content. Write them in bold if you talk about a particular topic instead. Add a link to them in your post so users can jump to the conclusion. This tactic will lead to better rankings and a higher score for your content. Remember, keywords with a low score will lead to poor ranking and less organic traffic.
6. Make a copywriter game
One of the greatest opportunities offered by the Internet is to improve your reputation in the industry and to start changing the world of digital marketing. So, this is going to be your chance to show your talent:
Choose one of these tasks and dedicate some time to learning about how to complete them. Start spending time on these activities and remember, each step will be long and tiring. Sometimes, you will have to face difficulties and setbacks and have to accept this. Yet keep in mind that the hardest days will come and eventually you’ll be able to find how to overcome them. Just keep on trying! After everything is over and the project is over, you can reflect on everything you did and start getting back to work.
8. Get feedback
It’s impossible to stay on top if you don’t check your progress regularly, so it pays to analyze what works and what doesn’t, but you can’t get enough feedback from yourself, so it’s ideal to ask your friends and colleagues for suggestions and perspectives. Of course, it’s difficult to talk about this, especially on Skype calls or wherever video call is the mode of communication. Therefore, you should start asking people who can provide useful insights into your work and the work you’re working on. This also shows your skills and your work as a whole! Besides, it will boost your confidence and will convince you to try again and again. I’ve always had trouble with this since sometimes I get asked for samples or demos. Asking for them isn’t an answer, at least, it’s just a start. Plus, it will have a positive impact on the quality of your project. Your team will also get to like it. This kind of feedback is very effective and will undoubtedly help you to improve and grow. Make sure you write down answers and use examples. You need to outline your ideas properly and e
xplain them very clearly. For my past projects, it was important to include a summary of what I presented and to discuss questions from my team. It helped me to think and express ideas clearly. And that’s when I saw the power of good recommendations. Maybe, I should start giving recommendations now!
7. Build your knowledge base
One of your jobs is to build your expertise. As a result, your professional name has to go down the ranks. Even though it’s not the easiest task, building
